UPS Welcomes Sylvain Gnamien from FHBU
In December 2021, the University of Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier welcomed Sylvain Gnamien, a PhD student from Felix Houphouët-Boigny University (FHBU) in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, under the joint supervision of Prof. Véronique Yoboué (FHBU) and Dr Cathy Liousse, a CNRS researcher from the Aerology Lab (LAERO) in Toulouse.
Sylvain spent three months in Toulouse as part of the H2020 MSCA-RISE INSA project, working with Dr Cathy Liousse and Dr Sekou Keita, a researcher at the UPGC of Korhogo currently on secondment at LAERO. As part of his thesis, Sylvain is investigating anthropogenic emissions of nitrogen compounds NOx (NO2, NO) and NH3. The establishment of African anthropogenic emissions inventories of nitrogen compounds uses a “bottom-up” approach. This involves comparing the fuel consumption of the various sectors of human activity with emission factors (EFs) by fuel and by species. During his secondment, Sylvain worked on identifying appropriate EFs for the different types of combustion activities, using EF data from a preliminary campaign of measurements of NOx emissions by vehicles and domestic fires. He also helped organise the future measurement campaign for NOx and NH3 emission factors, which will take place in 2022.
Sylvain successfully defended his thesis, Characterization of particulate pollution (PM10 and PM2.5) in Abidjan and Korhogo (Côte d’Ivoire) in relation to the health of populations, upon his return to Côte d’Ivoire in February 2022. His thesis work was part of the PASMU project (Pollution de l’Air et Santé dans les Milieux Urbains).
