October 2022

The knock-on effects of the INSA project are being seen, with three PhD students from Côte d'Ivoire being awarded complimentary scholarships. An aspiration of the H2020 RISE projects is that involvement will help participants when applying for other sources of funding. It is encouraging to see that students are benefitting from the positive environment provided by INSA.

Madina Doumbia and Adama Bakayoko, from University Felix Houphouet Boigny (UFHB), Côte d’Ivoire, currently on secondment at the Laboratoire d’Aérologie, Toulouse, will be heading to Montpellier from the 5-8 October to participate in the 2022 Désertif'actions meeting. The meeting will bring together NGOs, scientists, local authorities, international institutions, as well as actors from the private and public sectors to discuss land degradation through the prisms of desertification, protection of biodiversity, adaptation to climate change and its consequences in the North and in the South. The festival des Terres et des Graines, a day dedicated to sharing with the public, will be held on October 8. Madina and Adama will be joining the Les Petit.e.s Débrouillard.e.s d’Occitanie's (APDOC) Science Animation Truck, who will be presenting hands-on activities about nitrogen and its role in agriculture and the environment.

Recall that the objectives of the INSA project are to propose a synthesis of studies on nitrogen in Africa, and promote capacity building, skills strengthening and knowledge transfer between European and African experts on the topic of nitrogen in Africa. A project brief is available here together with a flyer about the project.

New Paper Alert: “A shift from cattle to camel and goat farming can sustain milk production with lower inputs and emissions in north sub-Saharan Africa’s drylands”
In their recent publication in Nature Food, Jaber Rahimi and co-authors find that shifting herd composition in north sub-Saharan Africa’s (NSSA) drylands can secure milk production while decreasing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water usage and feed consumption.

Secondment update

Times are tough for visa applicants in Africa. Despite an ease of covid-related restrictions, secondees have faced on-going challenges acquiring visas and visa-appointments. None-the-less, thanks to the persistence of INSA participants the obstacles are being overcome and secondments are continuing, albeit at a slower pace than initially planned. The last 6 months has seen the debut of 7 new secondments (see below) and 8 are expected to begin in the next three months.

  • The University of Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier (UPS) has welcomed four new secondees: Money Guillaume Ossohou, Adama Bakayoko and Madina Doumbia from UFHB, Côte d'Ivoire, and Venance Donnou from UCA, Benin.
  • In May, Benjamin Nyilitya from the Ministry of Water & Irrigation (MWSI), Kenya began a 3-month secondment at Ghent University, Belgium.
  • George Macharia, also from MWSI, recently arrived in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, for a 3-month secondment at the Institute of Meteorology and Climate research, Atmospheric Environmental Research (KIT - Campus Alpin).
  • Adama Bakayoko, UFHB, Côte d'Ivoire, spent 1-month working with APDOC, Toulouse, developing his science communication and facilitation skills.
