INSA
Newsletter

December 2021

Welcome to the first INSA newsletter!

The objectives of the INSA project are to propose a synthesis of studies on nitrogen in Africa, and promote capacity building, skills strengthening and knowledge transfer between European and African experts on the topic of nitrogen in Africa. A project brief is available here together with a flyer about the project.

Despite ongoing travel restrictions due to the covid-19 pandemic, the INSA project succeeded in facilitating 21 secondments in 2021, several of which are still ongoing. Scroll down to find out about the most recent exchanges.

Scientific output

Despite the impediments to staff exchanges, the scientific component of the INSA project is advancing, as illustrated by the secondment descriptions above.

A recent publication, led by Adama Bakayoko, a 3rd year PhD student from FHBU, provides a complete chemical characterization of rains collected in the tropical rural site of Mbita (Kenya) on the shores of Lake Victoria:

Adama Bakayoko, Corinne Galy-Lacaux, Véronique Yoboué, Jonathan Hickman, Frank Roux, et al. (2021). Dominant contribution of nitrogen compounds in precipitation chemistry in the Lake Victoria catchment (East Africa). Environmental Research Letters. 16 045013

Although not resulting directly from the INSA project, Ghent University and the University of Nairobi recently produced two policy briefs: Groundwater Resources Management in the Lake Victoria basin, Kenya and Eutrophication of Lake Victoria - Restoring the former glory by control of excess nitrogen discharge in the basin Victoria basin, Kenya. These documents are important supplements to more complete peer-reviewed scientific articles, allowing scientists to communicate key messages and outcomes to policy makers.
